A sustainable future for all is the desired goal for the whole world, but is this attainable using the same methods for everyone?

This is the question that powers the thrust of our research of global sustainability in UNIMAS.

Developing nations do not possess the same advantages as their highly developed counterparts. We strongly believe that understanding the local context is key to assist all nations around the globe, and key to ensure the achievement of global sustainability, in its truest form.

And this is why UNIMAS is keen to work from the local level. Through this, we can ensure a thorough understanding of the best practices that benefit both the local and global settings.

The Institute of Sustainable and Renewable Energy, or ISURE, is specifically established to be the leader in tackling this challenge.

ISURE started as the Centre for Renewable Energy in 2009. It is a major player in the success of micro-hydro community-based projects, conducted in various rural areas in Sarawak, including Sri Aman, Bario, and Padawan. One such project in Kampung Assum, Padawan, developed to support the village's socioeconomic sector, was awarded the ASEAN Energy Award in 2020.

To expand its focus and direction, the centre went through an upgrade into a research institute with clearer vision and actions. The research focus is now mapped to three areas: Green Energy, Climate Change, and Energy Sustainability.

Not only does ISURE strive to engineer new breakthroughs and sustain past projects, it also aims to empower communities by reinforcing the concept that environmental sustainability is "everyone's business".

We will be the centre where curious and inventive minds from various disciplines gather to spark ideas for global sustainability.

We will construct the local blueprint that assists global goals.
